The video above is Ollie Bye’s amazing tour de force video of The History of the World: Every Year.

As he describes it: “Since 200,000 BCE, humanity has spread around globe and enacted huge change upon the planet. This video shows every year of that story, right from the beginning.”

I had fun playing around with it and sped it up by 18x it’s normal speed so you can watch the whole thing in 60 seconds (see below).

However, if you actually want to see anything you’re better off watching the full version above.

And even more amazingly Ollie made a Google Doc of his research, which you can see here or keep reading below:

    That is so totally brilliant!

I’ve been wanting to see this map since the last century, and a few times have started to compile it, only to realise the Herculean effort required to complete it.

    So many thanks Brilliant Maps!

This is awesome sauce!!! For my own history and genealogy research, I have found that there are surprisingly few historical jurisdiction trees around. Even if you don’t have sub-divisions and just top-level entities, do you have something shareable like GeoJSON entries? Beyond the helpful Google doc, would be great if you had that available!

99.9 percent of Western people use BC and AD for writing dates. What is this bce and ce rubbish? It makes you seem to be writing by and for a tiny minority. Why should the rest of us take you seriously?
