Methodology:

To determine the bath, shower and bidet hotspots around the world, we calculated the percentage of hotel bookings in each country, state and city that have showers, baths or bidets.

We used Booking.com to determine the total number of accommodations (hotels, apartments, holiday rentals, etc.) in each geography and then found the number of accommodations in each geography that have either baths, showers or bidets using Booking.com filters.

We searched with no defined check-in and check-out dates that would otherwise affect the accommodation counts. We gathered data for all countries, U.S. states and UK cities, as well as the 100 most populous U.S. cities and the most populous cities in every country.

Bidet vs Toilet Paper

Here’s a breakdown of bidets vs. toilet paper based on hygiene, cost, comfort, and environmental impact.

Hygiene

Bidet Pros:

  • Cleans with water, which generally removes more residue than wiping alone.
  • Can be gentler on sensitive skin, especially for people with hemorrhoids, irritation, or after surgery/childbirth.
  • Reduces the spread of bacteria from hand contact compared to wiping.

Bidet Cons:

  • If not cleaned regularly, bidet nozzles can harbor bacteria.
  • Takes a bit of getting used to, some people feel less “dry” afterward without a wipe.

Toilet Paper Pros:

  • Quick, familiar, and no extra equipment required.
  • Allows for drying after wiping or after using a bidet.

Toilet Paper Cons:

  • Can smear rather than fully remove residue.
  • Can cause chafing, irritation, or microtears with frequent or harsh wiping.

Cost

Bidet Pros:

  • Long-term cost savings on toilet paper (especially with high usage households).
  • Basic bidet attachments can be inexpensive ($30–$60) and last years.

Bidet Cons:

  • Upfront cost for unit and possible plumbing or electrical installation.
  • Slight increase in water bill (but typically minimal).

Toilet Paper Pros:

  • No initial investment needed.
  • Available everywhere.

Toilet Paper Cons:

  • Ongoing cost adds up, average American household spends ~$120–$150/year.
  • More frequent trips to store or bulk purchases.

Environmental Impact

Bidet Pros:

  • Significantly reduces toilet paper consumption, lowering deforestation and paper processing impact.
  • Uses about 1/8 gallon of water per use, far less than the water used to make toilet paper.

Bidet Cons:

  • Still uses water and manufacturing resources to produce the unit.
  • Electric bidets consume a small amount of energy.

Toilet Paper Pros:

  • No water or energy needed in your bathroom for use.

Toilet Paper Cons:

  • Production uses large amounts of water, trees, and chemicals.
  • Packaging and transportation add to carbon footprint.

Comfort & Accessibility

Bidet Pros:

  • Gentle for people with limited mobility or post-surgical needs (less reaching/wiping).
  • Warm water and heated seat options can add comfort.

Bidet Cons:

  • Not always available in public restrooms.
  • First-time users may find them awkward.

Toilet Paper Pros:

  • Portable, universal, works anywhere.

Toilet Paper Cons:

  • Rough textures can be uncomfortable.
  • Not as effective for thorough cleaning.

Bottom Line

  • If you prioritize hygiene, long-term cost savings, and eco-friendliness, a bidet is usually the better choice.
  • If you value simplicity, portability, and zero setup, toilet paper wins.
  • Many people use a hybrid approach: bidet first, quick dab of toilet paper (or reusable towel) to dry afterward.

Really misleading odd the bat since this is only hotels and not at all homes. The word “hotels” should be in the headline.

It is an interesting study but I think it is quite misleading as you haven’t mentioned what exactly is considered a “bidet” in your context. Water- typically a spray hose/bum gun is used in most parts of middle, south and south east Asia. The Japanese style with a spray inbuilt is probably what you are referring to as bidet and what is often referred to as in the US as well. Originally, bidet is a ceramic wash bowl separate from the toilet to wash themselves. This might be the kind seen in Europe.

A better study might be water vs toilet paper, or including all forms of things referred to as “bidet” in modern contexts. Your information might exclude countries and places where it is the default form and the hotels might not feel the need to mention.
