How Long Has Each State Voted For The Same Party In US Presidential Elections

The maps below look at how long each state has voted for the same party in US Presidential elections. The maps come from 270toWin and I highly recommend you visit to play around with all their tools.

It should be noted that the states show the current number of electoral college votes as of 2024, not the number of votes they had that year.

Now on to the maps:

Since 1964 (Last 16 Elections)

Note:

Lyndon Johnson won a landslide victory in the 1964 presidential election.

Of note, this was the only election where Alaska voted with the Democrats.

Washington DC received electoral votes as a result of the 23rd Amendment in 1962. It first participated in the 1964 election, voting Democratic. It has never voted Republican.

Since 1968 (Last 15 Elections)

Note:

Republican Richard Nixon won the 1968 presidential election, reversing the Democratic electoral landslide of 1964.

This was also the last election where a 3rd party candidate won the popular vote of any state. 9 states that voted Republican that year have been solidly red since.

The states are:

Since 1972 (Last 14 Elections)

Note:

Republican Richard Nixon won a landslide victory in the 1972 presidential election. However, there were no changes to the 1968 ‘same party since’ map.

Since 1976 (Last 13 Elections)

Note:

Minnesota voted with the Democrats in support of Jimmy Carter’s victory in the 1976 presidential election. Although it has occasionally been a battleground state, it has not voted Republican since that year, making it the state with the longest consecutive Democratic winning streak.

Since 1980 (Last 12 Elections)

Note:

Republican Ronald Reagan denied Jimmy Carter a 2nd term in the 1980 presidential election. Four states that now have 64 electoral votes – Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina – voted Republican and have not voted for the Democratic nominee in any election since.

Since 1984 (Last 11 Elections)

Note:

Republican Ronald Reagan was re-elected by a huge electoral landslide in the 1984 presidential election. Democrat Walter Mondale won only his home state of Minnesota and Washington, DC, which is why those locations have Democratic winning streaks pre-dating 1984. Despite the Republican wave, there were no changes to the map from Reagan’s win in 1980 as many of the southern states that are deeply red today would go on to vote for Democrat Bill Clinton in 1992.

Since 1988 (Last 10 Elections)

Note:

Then Vice-President George Bush succeeded Ronald Reagan in the 1988 presidential election. Despite the Republicans holding the presidency, six states, sided with the Democrats that year and have done so ever since. These six states have 67 electoral votes today. Wisconsin was a 7th state on this list until it flipped Republican in 2016.

The six states are:

2. Massachusetts
3. New York
4. Oregon
5. Rhode Island
6. Washington

Since 1992 (Last 9 Elections)

Note:

Bill Clinton’s win in the 1992 presidential election marked the start of the so-called “blue wall”. These 18 states + DC voted as a bloc from 1992 through 2012.

Donald Trump broke through the wall in 2016, winning Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. He also won a congressional district in Maine.

Some states in the wall have streaks that date back to before 1992. The states added that year that have voted Democratic since are today worth 113 electoral votes. This includes California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine (statewide), Maryland, New Jersey, and Vermont.

Since 1996 (Last 8 Elections)

Note:

As with every incumbent winning a 2nd term, except Wilson in 1916 and Obama in 2012, Bill Clinton was re-elected with more electoral votes in the 1996 presidential election than in his first term. However, Georgia and Montana flipped Republican that year. Montana’s streak is still alive, while Georgia fell off this map when it voted for Joe Biden in 2020.

Since 2000 (Last 7 Elections)

Note:

George Bush won the controversial 2000 presidential election. Despite the closeness of that vote, 6 states, worth 47 electoral votes as of 2024, joined the Republican bloc. Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee and West Virginia have been red since.

Arizona also flipped to the GOP that year and continued a Republican streak until Joe Biden won it in 2020.

Since 2004 (Last 6 Elections)

Note:

George Bush was reelected in the 2004 presidential election. New Hampshire voted Democratic that year. Despite being one of the more closely-contested states every four years, it has been blue ever since.

Since 2008 (Last 5 Elections)

Note:

By sweeping that year’s battleground states, Barack Obama easily won the 2008 presidential election. Several of those states reverted to Republicans in 2012 and/or 2016.

However, three states (Virginia, Colorado, and New Mexico), worth 28 electoral votes as of 2024, have voted Democratic since 2008. Nevada was also part of this list until Donald Trump won it in 2024.

Since 2012 (Last 4 Elections)

Note:

Barack Obama won a 2nd term in the 2012 presidential election, although he became only the 2nd incumbent to do so while winning fewer electoral votes than in his first term.

Indiana and North Carolina voted Republican in 2012 and have remained that way through 2024.

Since 2016 (Last 3 Elections)

Note:

Donald Trump upended the electoral map in the 2016 presidential election. He flipped the rust belt states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that had not voted Republican in a generation.

Trump also won Florida, Iowa, Ohio and a congressional district in Maine. Those states – now worth 54 electoral votes – remained red in 2020 and 2024.

Since 2020 (Last 2 Elections)

Note:

Democrats – Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024 – won Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district in 2020 and again in 2024, making it blue on this map.

Donald Trump won a second term in 2024 by winning all seven of the battleground states on the map. Five of those were states he won in 2016, but lost in 2020. In addition, Trump picked up Nevada. The final of these states – North Carolina – has voted Republican since 2012.

Put another way, all states on the map except the six tan ones have voted for the same party in the two most recent presidential elections.
