Why does Morocco want Western Sahara?
Morocco claims sovereignty over Western Sahara based on:
1. Historical ties: The Sahara has always been part of Morocco historically, and its tribes have pledged allegiance to the kings of Morocco.
2. Legal support: The International Court of Justice has confirmed the existence of legal ties between Morocco and the Sahara.
3. Autonomy project: Morocco proposes a practical solution by granting the region self-rule under its sovereignty, with broad international support.
4. Development and stability: Morocco has invested in the development of the southern regions to improve the lives of the population, while enhancing regional security.
5. International support: Many countries recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, including the United States. Morocco considers the Sahara an integral part of its territorial integrity and asserts that the solution lies in autonomy.
