The Countries In Green Have A Larger GDP Than All Their Neighbours Combined

Map created by u/Icy_Discount_8031
The map above shows a rather surprising result that several countries in the world have larger GDP figures than all of the their land neighbours combined.

Here are the results for each (using IMF 2026 figures)

CountryOwn GDP ($bn)Neighbours combined ($bn)Own ÷ neighboursLand neighbours
United States$32,384$4,6287.0xCanada, Mexico
China$20,852$8,4112.5xIndia, Russia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Nepal, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Laos, North Korea, Bhutan
United Kingdom$4,265$7795.5xIreland
Brazil$2,636$1,9971.3xArgentina, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay, Guyana, Suriname
South Korea$1,931$17112xNorth Korea
Turkey$1,640$1,1911.4xGreece, Iran, Iraq, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Syria
Indonesia$1,540$5532.8xMalaysia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste
Israel$720$5621.3xEgypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine
South Africa$480$1283.7xZimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, Lesotho
Nigeria$377$1432.6xCameroon, Benin, Chad, Niger
Dominican Republic$136$393.5xHaiti

Notes:

  • Brazil: France’s GDP is about $3,596bn, so counting it would take the neighbour total to roughly $5,593bn and flip Brazil to red.
  • Israel: this is the tightest margin, and Egypt alone is about $430bn of the $562bn.
  • Turkey: Iran’s figure varies a lot by source ($300bn IMF 2026 against $448bn UN 2024), but Turkey still clears the total using the higher one.
  • Gap-fills: the IMF has no current figure for some neighbours, so I used UN 2024 for North Korea ($17.2bn) and Syria ($17.3bn), the 2024 figure for Palestine ($16.0bn), and IMF 2025 for Lebanon and Afghanistan. None of these changes a result.
