Japan has by far the highest number, followed by Germany (cold war legacy), South Korea, and Italy.
Now the data is for September 2023, and at that time there were still 38 active duty troops in Russia (I assume working at the US embassy?).
And as USAFacts states:
Where US military members are stationed overseas has shifted over time. For example, at the height of the Cold War in the early 1950s, there were over 400,000 troops stationed in Europe to prevent the expansion of the Soviet Union. These numbers dropped following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Why does the US have troops overseas?
The United States maintains troops overseas to address national security priorities and uphold its strategic interests across different regions of the world.
These deployments are shaped by alliances, conflict response, deterrence strategies, and global stability efforts.
Here’s a summary of the key regions and the reasons for US troop presence:
Europe
- NATO Commitment: The US reinforces NATO with increased troop deployments to support the alliance.
- Russia-Ukraine Conflict: The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine led to a bolstered US presence in Eastern Europe, enhancing defense capabilities.
- Long-Term Bases: Strategic installations in countries like Germany, Poland, and the UK support joint exercises and regional stability.
Middle East
- Security Priorities: Protect US interests, assist Israel, counter terrorism, and deter hostile actions in the region.
- Ongoing Presence: Despite reductions since the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, over 30,000 troops remain in the region to support objectives, including combating ISIS and stabilizing regional tensions.
Indo-Pacific
- China Deterrence: Troops support efforts to counter China’s influence and enhance partnerships with allies.
- Strategic Frameworks: Objectives include defending Taiwan, securing the Korean Peninsula, and strengthening regional security alliances like those with India, Japan, and Australia.
Public Perception
- In countries hosting US troops, public opinion is generally neutral to positive, influenced by economic benefits and personal interactions. However, views of US foreign policy can vary, particularly in some European nations.
The global deployment of US troops underscores its role in fostering international stability and addressing emerging threats.
What do you think? Are US troops overseas a good or bad thing?
