Making Sense Of The World, One Map At A Time
The map above looks at the estimated GDP per capita of various European Regions in 1750, just as the industrial revolution was starting.
On a per capita basis, Northern Italy, The Dutch coast, Southern England and central Spain were among the richest areas.
Now, any estimate of historic GDP involves some guestimating (see: Roman Empire GDP) so here’s how they arrived at this data.
In 2010, Chengdu had no metro to at all, whereas Toronto’s subway system had 4 lines. Fast forward to 2024 and Chengdu has 13 lines with 373 compared to Toronto’s 3 lines and 70 stations.

The map above shows the percentage of people 16+ in most European countries that have read at least one book in the last 12 months. Switzerland, Luxembourg and Denmark are at the top of the pack whereas Romania, Türkiye and Cyprus are at the bottom.
The data comes from Eurostat. And here’s how it breaks down by gender in each country:
The map shows what percentage of each Europeans country’s population can speak 3 or more languages. Unsurprisingly, Luxembourg, Finlamd, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland are in the top 5.
Also, not surprising to see the UK so low, although I am surprised it’s higher than France and on par with Spain.

It’s based on the German Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (German: Ständiger Ausschuss für geographische Namen (StAGN)) definition of various regions.

The map above uses the US Census 2022 American Community Survey 5-Year Data to look at what percentage of the population over the age of 25 has less than a 9th grade education.

The map above shows what percentage of people (over 25) who live in each US county have completed high-school. Wyoming is the clear winner with all counties being above 88% (the highest category). At the other extreme some counties have rates as low as 33%

Ukraine in particular (smaller map insert) was particularly well covered (more that below).
The map above shows the number of antisemitic incidents recorded in each European country per million inhabitants (of all religions) in 2023.
Austria is the big outlier at 128.9 per million people, whereas Spain is at the other extreme with “only” 2.1 per million.
