Countries With a Higher Or Lower GDP Per Capita Vs Washington DC

While researching my previous post on Is Your Country Richer or Poorer Than Mississippi?, I came across an interesting finding.

Washington DC with a population of 702,250 people and total GDP $185 billion (higher than 15 other states) has by far the highest nominal GDP per capita of any state or district in the United States at $263,220 in 2024.

In fact it is so rich, it even beats Monaco ($256,581) in per capita terms.

Why is Washington DC so much richer per capita compared to any other US state?

Washington, D.C., has notably higher per capita wealth compared to U.S. states for several interconnected reasons:

High Concentration of Federal Jobs

  • The federal government offers stable employment with relatively high salaries.
  • Government jobs often attract highly educated professionals, who generally have higher incomes.

Professional Services Economy

  • D.C. has a robust ecosystem of lawyers, lobbyists, consultants, contractors, and advocacy groups, all of which offer high-paying jobs.
  • These professions are closely tied to government and policy-making, generating substantial income.

Education and Skills Level

  • D.C. boasts a high proportion of highly educated residents, who typically earn more.
  • Universities and think tanks attract highly skilled workers and researchers.

Limited Geography and High Property Values

  • D.C. is geographically small with limited housing supply, driving property values and rents upward.
  • Higher living costs mean those who remain generally have incomes sufficient to manage these expenses.

Selective Residency and Commuting Patterns

  • Many lower-income workers commute from neighbouring states, leaving a relatively wealthier resident population inside D.C.
  • Surrounding suburbs in Maryland and Virginia absorb populations who can’t afford to live directly in the city, skewing per capita income upward.

Economic Inequality and Polarization

  • Despite high average incomes, D.C. has significant economic inequality, with substantial pockets of poverty alongside concentrated wealth, but the high-income population heavily influences the per capita average.

Do you think it’s fair that DC is so much richer than the rest of the US?
