Making Sense Of The World, One Map At A Time
While researching my previous post on Is Your Country Richer or Poorer Than Mississippi?, I came across an interesting finding.
Washington DC with a population of 702,250 people and total GDP $185 billion (higher than 15 other states) has by far the highest nominal GDP per capita of any state or district in the United States at $263,220 in 2024.
The map shows which countries (and Canadian provinces) have a higher GDP per capita in nominal terms than Mississippi, the poorest US state with a GDP per capita of $53,061 in 2024.

The map above shows the gross regional domestic product (GRDP) per capita of Italian regions in nominal USD values for 2022.
South Tyrol was the richest region at $60,150 USD per capita (about the same as South Carolina) and Calabria was the lowest at $21,400 (about the same as Poland).

Now, unusual for maps about Italy it’s actually the South that does better than the North with rates that are far lower.
Below you can see the numbers for 2022 the latest year data is available. Note that the numbers below have not been adjusted by population size and represent the total number suicides.
And the one thing that really jumps out at me is France really living up to its stenotype.

If you asked the average person what the biggest city in Europe was, most people would probably guess Paris or London.
But they’d be wrong.
For a huge majority, Chinese shopping app Temu was the “winner”. The original map author doesn’t list a source, but there are several different websites that track these things which you can see below.
The map above shows which countries use a unique currency symbol when showing prices (e.g. $, £, €) vs countries that just display prices using letters from the alphabet (RS, kr, etc.)

The map concept comes from architecture firm XML‘s research into the various shapes of the world’s parliaments.
The map above supposedly shows the most popular holiday destinations for people from each European country.
