The Route Of Marco Polo's Journey

The map above shows Marco Polo’s incredible journey from Venice to China and back again.

Marco Polo’s journey to China, one of the most famous journeys of the medieval world, took place in the late 13th century.

It was groundbreaking for the time, given the distance, the cultural barriers, and the sheer difficulty of travel along the Silk Road.

Here’s a closer look at the journey and its historical context:

1. Background and Departure

  • Marco Polo was born in Venice in 1254 to a merchant family. His father, Niccolò Polo, and his uncle, Maffeo Polo, were already experienced traders who had traveled as far as the court of Kublai Khan, the Mongol ruler of the Yuan dynasty in China.
  • In 1271, Marco Polo, then only about 17, set out with his father and uncle on a new journey to Kublai Khan’s court. This time, they brought papal letters, gifts, and some Christian monks in response to the Khan’s earlier request for missionaries.

2. The Silk Road Route

  • The journey took about 24 years, with nearly four years of travel to reach China. They journeyed overland along the Silk Road, an arduous route passing through many regions, including the Middle East, Persia, Central Asia, and the Taklamakan Desert.
  • They faced numerous hardships such as harsh climates, difficult terrains, and political instability. Along the way, Marco witnessed various cultures, landscapes, and religions that would later color his writings.

3. Life in Kublai Khan’s Court

  • Upon arriving in China around 1275, Marco Polo was warmly received by Kublai Khan. The Khan was reportedly impressed by the young Venetian’s intellect and adaptability and made him a court emissary.
  • Polo traveled extensively within the Yuan Empire, including places like Yunnan, Burma, and possibly even Java. He was employed in various administrative roles, which allowed him a first-hand view of life in medieval China.

4. Observations and Contributions

  • Marco Polo’s account, recorded later as Il Milione (known in English as The Travels of Marco Polo), introduced Europeans to the marvels of China, including its use of paper money, grand palaces, coal for fuel, and complex administrative systems.
  • Although his descriptions were often met with skepticism, his account provided one of the first extensive views of Asia for a European audience, inspiring future explorers like Christopher Columbus.

5. Return and Legacy

  • After about 17 years in China, Marco Polo and his family left in 1292, accompanying a Mongol princess to Persia. The journey back to Venice was long and hazardous, but they finally returned in 1295.
  • After his return, Polo’s stories became famous in Europe. However, it’s worth noting that some scholars debate the accuracy of certain details in his accounts, suggesting either embellishment or mistranslation.

Marco Polo’s journey fostered a new curiosity about Asia in Europe and marked the beginning of a more direct interaction between the two continents, influencing both world trade and the European Age of Exploration.

Thanks for the colorful maps. When I read I always have a map near me so I understand the traveling. Lately I’ve been reading about the Mongol Queens. Genhis Khan is my favorite to study.
    Thanks again.
