The map above shows the percentage of people 16+ in most European countries that have read at least one book in the last 12 months. Switzerland, Luxembourg and Denmark are at the top of the pack whereas Romania, Türkiye and Cyprus are at the bottom.

The data comes from Eurostat. And here’s how it breaks down by gender in each country:

How Many People Can Speak 3 Languages By European Country

The map shows what percentage of each Europeans country’s population can speak 3 or more languages. Unsurprisingly, Luxembourg, Finlamd, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland are in the top 5.

Also, not surprising to see the UK so low, although I am surprised it’s higher than France and on par with Spain.

USSR Electrification Map From 1959

The above shows the progress of electrification in the Soviet Union in 1959. The more populous European part of Russia was relatively well electrified by the late 1950’s, whereas progress into Siberia was still ongoing.

Ukraine in particular (smaller map insert) was particularly well covered (more that below).

Austria is the big outlier at 128.9 per million people, whereas Spain is at the other extreme with “only” 2.1 per million.

The data comes from the Tel Aviv University Antisemitism Worldwide Report for 2023.

Y-DNA similarity Between Czechia and Other European Countries and Regions

The map looks at how genetically similar various other European countries and regions are to Czechia (Czech Republic) based on Y-DNA. As with most of these maps the further you move from the country, the fewer similarities you get.

That said there are few odd standouts like the south of Spain being more similar than you’d expect and Finland being way less similar given geographic distance.

Y-DNA (Y-chromosome DNA) refers to the DNA located on the Y chromosome, which is one of the two sex chromosomes in humans (the other being the X chromosome).
