
What is An Oxbow Lake & How Are They Formed?
An oxbow lake is a U-shaped body of water that forms when a wide meander from a river is cut off, creating a free-standing lake.
This process occurs through erosion and deposition.
Here’s how it typically happens:
- Meander Formation: Rivers often develop curves called meanders as they flow through relatively flat terrain.
- Erosion and Deposition: Erosion occurs on the outer banks of these curves, where the water flows faster, and deposition happens on the inner banks, where the flow is slower.
- Cutoff: Over time, the meander becomes more pronounced until the river eventually cuts through the narrow neck of the meander during a high-flow event, such as a flood.
- Formation of an Oxbow Lake: The cutoff portion of the river becomes isolated from the main flow, forming a U-shaped lake, which is the oxbow lake.
Oxbow lakes can be found in many river systems around the world and are important ecological habitats, often supporting diverse wildlife.

- Cuckmere Haven (East Sussex, England): This area features classic oxbow lakes formed by the meandering Cuckmere River.
- Kanwar Lake (Bihar, India): One of Asia’s largest oxbow lakes, formed by the meandering of the Gandak River.
- Reelfoot Lake (Tennessee, USA): Formed by a series of earthquakes on the Mississippi River in the early 19th century.
