
Albania
- According to the 2023 census, there were 1,101,718 (45.86%) Sunni Muslims and 115,644 (4.81%) Bektashi Muslims, just forming a majority in the country.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
- According to the 2013 census, 50.7% (1,769,592) of the population identify religiously as Muslim.
Bulgaria
- Islam the second largest religion in the country (after Christianity). According to the 2021 Census, the total number of Muslims in Bulgaria stood at 638,708 or 9.8% of the population. They live mainly in parts of northeastern Bulgaria (mainly in Razgrad, Targovishte, Shumen and Silistra Provinces) and in the Rhodope Mountains (mainly in Kardzhali Province and Smolyan Province).
Cyprus
- Before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the Turkish Cypriot community made up 18% of the island’s population and lived throughout the island. Today, most of the estimated 264,172 Muslims are based in the north of the island in Northern Cyprus.
Greece
- Just under 100,000 Muslims officially live in Greece, (mostly Western Thrace in Northern Greece) and they are the only explicitly recognized minority in Greece by the government.
Kosovo
- Today, 95.6% (1,663,412) of Kosovo’s population are Muslims, most of whom are ethnic Albanians.
North Macedonia
- Muslims in North Macedonia represent just under one-third of the nation’s total population according to the 2021 census with 590,878 people.
Romania
- According to the 2022 census, 76,215 people in Romania, approximately 0.4% of the total population, indicated that their religion was Islam
Serbia
- Islam is a minority faith in Serbia representing around 4.2% (278,212) of the total population (excluding Kosovo). The municipality of Novi Pazar is home to Serbia’s largest Muslim population, with 82,710 Muslims out of 100,410 inhabitants (82% of its population). The municipality of Tutin has the highest share of Muslims in Serbia, with around 94% of its population being Muslim. The Sjenica Municipality has also a very large Muslim population (79%), followed by the Prijepolje Municipality (45%).
Turkey
- Turkey is a secular state with no official state religion; the constitution provides for freedom of religion and conscience, but according to the World Factbook, Muslims constitute 99.8% of the population, most of them being Sunni.
