The Battle of Tours (732 AD): The Showdown That Shaped Europe
Lead-Up:
- Early 700s: The Umayyad Caliphate rapidly expanded from the Middle East across North Africa and into Spain (Al-Andalus).
- Umayyad forces crossed the Pyrenees Mountains into modern-day France, pushing deep into Frankish territories.
- After being defeated, Duke Odo of Aquitaine appealed to Charles Martel, the Frankish “Mayor of the Palace,” for help.
- Martel united the Frankish nobles and raised a strong, disciplined army to stop the invasion near Tours.
The Battle:
- Fought on 10 October 732 between the Franks (under Charles Martel) and the Umayyads (led by Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi).
- Martel positioned his troops on high ground, forming dense infantry squares and defensive shield walls.
- Umayyad cavalry charges repeatedly attacked but failed to break the Frankish line.
- During the fighting, Abd al-Rahman was killed, causing confusion among his troops.
- Overnight, the Umayyad army retreated, leaving behind their camp and spoils, a clear Frankish victory.
Aftermath:
- The Umayyads ceased major incursions north of the Pyrenees after the defeat.
- Charles Martel earned the nickname “The Hammer” and cemented his authority over the Frankish realm.
- His dynasty, the Carolingians, later produced Charlemagne, who united much of Western Europe.
- The battle secured Western Europe’s Christian character and halted the northern spread of Islamic rule.
Historical Significance:
- Seen as a turning point that defined Europe’s cultural and religious identity.
- Preserved the conditions for the rise of medieval Christendom and the Frankish Empire.
- Symbolically viewed as the moment “Europe was saved” from further Islamic expansion.
What If the Umayyads Had Won?
- Islamic forces could have advanced into central and northern Europe, reshaping its history.
- The Carolingian dynasty (and later Holy Roman Empire) might never have emerged.
- Europe’s languages, religions, and political systems could have evolved under Islamic influence, possibly linking Spain and France within a single Muslim realm.

Once more: Juhana would be a female, although i don’t think there are too many of them.
The name you need is Juhani. Males tend to end in an I, females an A.
