The map above makes a rather interesting comparison that between how much territory has been lost in Ukraine War from January 2024 to November 2025, compared to that lost on the Western Front In WW1 from January 1915 to November 1916.

“What motivated me to make this map was an argument I had with a few people on this very subreddit (MapPorn) who claimed to my astonishment and great dismay that the war in Ukraine has been slower than the WW1 western front.”
In both cases the map does not show the starts of the wars.
Russia initially gained significant territory during the war only be pushed back somewhat. Similarly the Germans in World War 1 almost reached Paris before being forced into their own stalemate.
There is a lot of criticism of the map on reddit, but I still think it’s fair way to compare things.
For me the biggest takeaway is that Ukraine is still doing remarkable well in the war given that Russia has nearly 4x the population of Ukraine and still can’t beat them.
