two grids

The map above shows the Rose Hill (aka Slants Streets) neighborhood of Missoula Montana. Here’s how it came about:

The Slant Streets came to be because two lawyers in the 1880s, W.M. Bickford and W.J. Stephens, tried to plot out a new town called South Missoula with streets running parallel and perpendicular to what was known as the wagon road with a bridge crossing the river at Stephens Avenue.

However, the city’s co-founder, CP Higgins, made the decision to connect the bridge to Higgins Avenue and the streets in that area were built in grid form.

Here are some key points about the Slant Streets:

  1. Street Layout: Unlike the typical grid pattern found in most of Missoula, the Slant Streets have a diagonal orientation, giving the neighborhood its name. This layout was designed to maximize sunlight exposure for homes during the colder months.
  2. History: The neighborhood was developed in the early 20th century, with many of the homes reflecting the architectural styles of that period, such as Craftsman, Bungalow, and Colonial Revival.
  3. Location: The Slant Streets are located in the central part of Missoula, roughly bordered by Brooks Street, Mount Avenue, Higgins Avenue, and South Avenue. This central location provides residents with easy access to downtown Missoula, the University of Montana, and several parks.
  4. Community: The area is known for its strong sense of community, with many long-term residents and a mix of families, professionals, and students. The unique layout and historic charm contribute to a close-knit and friendly neighborhood atmosphere.
  5. Amenities: Residents of the Slant Streets enjoy proximity to various amenities, including shops, restaurants, schools, and recreational facilities. The neighborhood is also near the Missoula County Fairgrounds and several public parks, providing ample opportunities for outdoor activities.
  6. Architectural Significance: The homes in the Slant Streets neighborhood are often noted for their architectural significance, with many properties being well-preserved examples of early 20th-century residential design.
