Location Of The Only Russian Orthodox Church In North Korea

The Church of the Life-Giving Trinity (Pyongyang) is presently the only Russian Orthodox Church in all of North Korea.

Here’s more about it:

The Church of the Life-Giving Trinity is a Russian Orthodox church located in Pyongyang, North Korea. Consecrated in August 2006, it is one of the few officially recognized Christian churches in the country.

The church was built with the assistance of the Russian Orthodox Church and with the approval of the North Korean government. It serves primarily the small Russian expatriate community in Pyongyang, including diplomats and workers, but is also open to North Korean citizens.

The construction of the church was a significant event, symbolizing a rare instance of religious cooperation between North Korea and a foreign religious institution.

The church features traditional Russian Orthodox architecture and serves as a place of worship, conducting services in the Russian language.

Here’s an image of the Church by Alkhimov Maxim in 2011:

Christianity in North Korea

In North Korea, freedom of religion is constitutionally guaranteed but severely restricted in practice.

The government maintains strict control over religious activities, and independent religious practices are not tolerated. There are a few state-sanctioned churches in Pyongyang—Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox—that are primarily intended for foreign visitors and to present an image of religious tolerance.

The general population has limited access to religious services, and unauthorized religious activities can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment in labor camps.

The practice of Christianity is particularly sensitive due to historical associations with foreign influence and perceived threats to the regime’s ideology.

Christianity in South Korea

In contrast, South Korea has a vibrant and diverse religious landscape with full freedom of religion guaranteed by its constitution. Christianity is one of the major religions, with approximately 29% of the population identifying as Christian (split between Protestantism and Catholicism).

South Korea has numerous churches, theological seminaries, and Christian organizations that play significant roles in education, healthcare, and social services.

Christianity has had a substantial cultural and social impact in South Korea, influencing various aspects of society, including politics, education, and the arts.

South Korean Christians are also active in global missionary work.

Russian Orthodox Church in South Korea

The Korean Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church has 4 Parishes in South Korea and is also responsible for the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity.

Moreover, the Eastern Orthodox Metropolis of Korea has 7 parishes in South Korea: in the cities of Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Jeonju, Palang-Li, Chuncheon, and Ulsan with a total of around 6,000 members.
