Cats may be highly independent creatures, but their language is quite similar throughout the world.
The majority of cat sounds begin with an ‘m,’ including the familiar Meow (Australia, Kenya and Micronesia, to name but a few).
There’s Miau in Nicaragua, Myaco in Nepal, and Miu Miu in Bangladesh.
True to form, however, some felines will just do their own thing, including those in North and South Korea (Yaong) and Malaysia (Ngiau).

How do you say it?
Looking at the map you can see why Trump wants Canada, who wouldn’t want a second Alabama or New Jersey?
The map above is based off of a Q4 2024 Yougov Survey asking British adults if they’d ever heard of the country and if they had, whether or not they had a positive opinion about it.
Now just because a country has a positive low score doesn’t necessarily mean British adults dislike a country, but could simply mean they have no opinion about it one way or another.
Personally, I don’t have strong views on Palau, Comoros or Nauru.

Those who have no idea its history, could reasonably assume that each state has only been admitted once to the United States.
Of course once you remember the Civil War, you realise that all the Confederate states had to be admitted a second time after the defeat of the Confederacy by the Union.
But what then of Georgia?
The map above shows what the French call the “Gulf of America”. To them it’s still just: “Le Golfe du Mexique.”
On January 20, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America within U.S. federal documents and communications.
The map above comes from the cover of Daniel Immerwahr’s best selling book: How To Hide An Empire: A History of the Greater United States.
Out of curiosity I decided to look at the size of the various territories mentioned on the cover relative to the size of the 48 contiguous United States.
