Area Transferred To France From Italy In The Paris Peace Treaty Of 1947

The map above shows the ceded to France from Italy in the Paris Peace Treaty Of 1947. The map is from the Office of the Geographer, Department of State and reads:

Boundary Brief: The boundary between France and Italy extends generally southward from the Swiss tripoint to the Mediterranean, roughly coinciding with the water divide separating the Rhone basin of southeast France and the upper reaches of the Po Valley in the Italian Piedmont. The length (as measured in the Office of the Geographer on map sheets at a scale of 1:250,000) is 303 miles, or 488 kilometers, representing 17.6 percent of the land boundaries of France and 23.5 percent of those of Italy. The boundary is demarcated throughout.

Legend:

  • Red areas: Area transferred from Italy to France in the Peace Treaty of 1947.
  • Dashed line: Present international boundary.

Areas transferred from Italy to France (in red):

  • Little St. Bernard Pass
  • Mont Cenis Plateau
  • Mont Thabor
  • Chaberton
  • Upper Valleys of La Tinée, La Vesubie, and La Roya

You can read the full text of the Peace Treaty in French here. The relevant section of Article 2 has been translated below:

The border between Italy and France, as it was on 1 January 1938, will be modified as follows:

1. Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard

The new border will follow the watershed, leaving the current border approximately 2 kilometres north-west of the Hospice, crossing the road approximately 1 kilometre north-east of the Hospice and joining the current border approximately 2 kilometres south-east of the Hospice.

2. Plateau du Mont Cenis

The new border will leave the current border approximately 3 kilometres north-west of the summit of Rochemelon, crossing the road approximately 4 kilometres south-east of the Hospice and joining the current border approximately 4 kilometres north-east of Mont d’Ambin.

3. Mont Thabor-Chaberton

(a) In the Mont Thabor region, the new border will leave the current border approximately 5 kilometres east of Mont Thabor and head south-east to join the current border approximately 3 kilometres west of Pointe de Charra.

(b) In the Chaberton region, the new border will leave the current border approximately 3 kilometres north-north-west of Chaberton, which it will skirt to the east, and will cross the road approximately 1 kilometre from the current border, which it will join approximately 2 kilometres south-east of the town of Montgenèvre.

4. Upper valleys of the Tinée, Vésubie and Roya

The new border will leave the current border at Colla Longa, follow the watershed line through Mont Clapier, Col de Tende and Mont Marguareis, from where it will descend southward through Mont Saccarello, Mont Vacchi, Mont Pietravecchia, Mont Lega, and reach a point located approximately 100 metres from the current border, near Colla Pegairolle, about 5 kilometres north-east of Breil; from there, in a south-westerly direction, it will join the current border about 100 metres south-west of Mont Mergo.

The detailed description of the sections of the boundary to which the modifications indicated in paragraphs 1, 2, 3 and 4 above apply is set out in Annex II to this Treaty, the maps to which this description refers being set out in Annex I.
