Map Showing Only Domestic Flights Within Countries

Map created by phaj19

The map above only shows domestic flight routes within countries.

Large rich countries like the United States and China have loads whereas smaller countries have few to none.

But perhaps most striking is how few routes there are in Africa.

Top 10 Countries By Domestic Flights

10 biggest domestic markets

Data comes from OAG.com

The table above shows the number of domestic seats available in each country in Feb 2025.

The top 10 are:

  1. US – 76.8 million
  2. China – 71.2 million
  3. India – 14.7 million
  4. Japan – 11.1 million
  5. Brazil – 9.2 million
  6. Indonesia – 8.0 million
  7. Australia – 6.2 million
  8. Mexico – 5.2 million
  9. Spain 4.1 million
  10. Türkiye – 4.1 million

And in case you’re curious about total capacity by region here’s another lust from OAG that includes both domestic and international capacity.

Generally speaking domestic flights make up about 60% of capacity globally vs 40% for international, but obviously this varies a lot by region.

Argentina would have a significantly denser domestic route network if it hadn’t fallen from its early 20th century peak prosperity.

The map shows flights to the overseas provinces of Spain as domestic but does not show flights to the French overseas Departments.
