
The map above shows the estimated share of Native Americans by country in the Americas.
Now the definition of who is and is not Native varies from country to country.
For example, Mestizos in Latin America and Metis in Canada are excluded by the author.
Overall, 7.1% or 74.8 million people in the Americas can be considered as Native.
But there is a big variation between countries, for example Brazil’s population is less than 1% Native, but still numbers over 1.7 million. Canada is over 3% Native, but given it’s smaller population this only translates into 1.2 million people.
At the other end you have Peru which is 45% Native with around 15.5 million people and Bolivia 62% Native with 7.7 million.
And finally, you have the Caribbean islands most of which have little to no native inhabitants.
