Saudi Arabia’s Highway 10 is famous for its extraordinary straightness, holding the Guinness World Record for the longest uninterrupted stretch of straight road globally.
The straight segment spans approximately 256 kilometres (about 159 miles) , running from Haradh, a city known for its oil and gas reserves, to Al Batha near the United Arab Emirates border.
Key Features of Highway 10
- World Record Holder: The 256 km straight stretch surpasses Australia’s Eyre Highway, which previously held the record with a 146 km straight segment.
- Geographical Route: The highway cuts through the vast Rub’ al-Khali desert, also known as the Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the world.
- Historical Background: Originally constructed as a private road for King Fahd, it has since become a vital transportation route, especially for freight movement between Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
- Driving Conditions: The road is fully paved and primarily consists of two lanes in each direction. Despite its straightness, drivers are advised to remain vigilant due to potential hazards like stray camels and the monotonous landscape, which can lead to driver fatigue.
