Butter Vs Olive Oil Consumption By European Region Map

Map created by Fox979The map above shows the most consumed cooking fat between butter and olive oil. Also unlike some other maps it also shows where the two are used more or less equally.

Observations from the Map:

1. Butter Consumption (Yellow Regions):
   • Butter is predominantly consumed in Northern, Central, and Eastern European countries. This includes countries like the UK, Ireland, Germany, France (excluding southern regions), Poland, Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland), Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic states.
2. Olive Oil Consumption (Dark Green Regions):
   • Olive oil is the most consumed in Southern Europe. This includes countries like Spain, Portugal, Southern Italy, Greece, and parts of the Mediterranean coast. These regions are known for their Mediterranean diet, which prominently features olive oil.
3. Mixed Consumption (Light Green Regions):
   • Some regions, particularly in southern France, Northern Italy, and parts of the Balkans, show a mixed consumption pattern of both butter and olive oil.

Additional Information:

The map is based on various sources, including Langeist (2018), Statista Research Dept (2016), and Euromonitor (2017-2021).

It specifically highlights the primary fats consumed and does not consider other edible oils, such as seed oils (e.g., sunflower, canola).

Here’s an alternative map that considers other cooking fats and oils:
