The map above shows that Russia’s nominal GDP (according to the IMF) in 2025 $2.2 Trillion. This makes it the world’s 11th largest.
Or put another way, it is roughly the same as the GDP of Spain ($1.8 Trillion), Portugal ($320 Billion) and Andorra ($4 Billion) put together.
However, Russia has 146 million people compared to a combined 60 million in Spain (49 million), Portugal (10.6 million) and Andorra (87k).
And the map below shows how many Russia sized economies there are in Europe:
Russia vs European Nominal GDP 2025

First of all Germany ($4.9 Trillion), UK ($3.7 Trillion), France ($3.3 Trillion) and Italy ($2.5 Trillion) each have nominal GDPs greater than Russia’s.
On top of that the following blocks also have similar sized economies, around $2.2 Trillion:
South-west Europe:
- Spain
- Portugal
- Andorra
Balkans
- Turkey
- Greece
- Bulgaria
- Serbia
- North Macedonia
- Albania
- Bosnia & Herzegovina
- Croatia
- Slovenia
Neo-Scandinavia
Former Russian Orbit
Austria-Hungary 2.0
- Austria
- Hungary
- Czech Republic
- Switzerland
Benelux & The Micro-States
- Netherlands
- Belgium
- Luxembourg
- Cyprus
- Malta
- Liechtenstein
- Monaco
- San Marino
However, there is so objection to using Nominal GDP, since this is just the value of a country’s economy translated into US dollars at current market exchange rates. This does not reflect the true cost of living in a country.
Therefore, some economists use PPP $, or Purchasing Power Parity which is an attempt to better reflect how far your money goes in a given country.
On that basis, Russia’s economy goes from the 11th largest to the 4th largest according to the IMF. At $7.1 Trillion this makes it bigger than any single other European economy.
Russia vs European PPP GDP 2025

However, even on this basis there are 6 Blocks with economies as big or bigger than Russia based on PPP $.
They are:

United Kingdom Of Norway, Netherlands & Ireland (Note slightly larger than Russia’s GDP)

Finally you have the remaining countries of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Denmark who collectively have combined GDP of around $4.0 Trillion.
Surprised?

• What’s the point of this?
As my young grand-daughter keeps saying: “a nuke will wipe-out everyone. We Humans are stupid and We will get rid of E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E. No one will be left. Let’s just keep dealing with each other as if to-day is the last day. We all need to remember that our current leaders are in this for themselves!”
