Europe According to Donald Trump In 2018

Map created by Yanko Tsvetkov
The map above is the work Yanko Tsvetkov and was created in 2018 as part of his Atlas of Prejudice map series.

It’s supposed to be a humorous look at how the Donald Trump 1.0 viewed Europe in 2018.

Here’s what’s included:

1. Iceland

  • Label: “Alaska?”
  • Explanation: Plays on Trump’s supposed hazy grasp of geography—and the notion that Iceland might be “just another bit of the far north” he could try to purchase (akin to his famously reported interest in buying Greenland).

2. The Seas and Lands Around Europe

  • “Fake Global Warming” (written over the North Atlantic near Iceland) – Alludes to Trump’s past denial of climate change.
  • “Tremendous Ocean” (far west, Atlantic) – Echoes Trump’s fondness for the adjective “tremendous.”
  • “So Sad! and Very Sad” (over North Africa) – Two of Trump’s catchphrase.
  • “Sea of Drowning Terrorists” (Mediterranean) – A jab at Trump’s rhetoric on migrants crossing by boat.
  • “Putin’s Ocean” (Black Sea) – Mocks the idea that Trump sees the Black Sea as Russia’s backyard.

3. British Isles

  • United Kingdom: “Country Break‐zit”
    • Explanation: A pun on “Brexit,” suggesting Trump might see the UK as a country trying to “break away” from the EU.
  • Ireland: “EU colony” since it’s remained part of the EU
  • Scotland: Country House, Trump famously owns the Trump International Scotland gold course.

4. Scandinavia & The Nordics

  • Norway (gold area): “Money Hoarders”
    • Explanation: Norway’s vast sovereign wealth fund are lampooned as “hoarding” money.
  • Denmark: “Commies”
    • Explanation: Denmark and the other Scandinavian countries are famous for having a more socialist approach to things.
  • Finland: “Helsinkia”
    • Explanation: A playful misspelling of “Helsinki,” also alludes to Trump’s 2018 Helsinki summit with Putin.
  • Sweden is  labeledas “Litigious P*ssy—Don’t Grab!!!” (a nod to the “grab ‘em…” scandal plus Sweden’s tough sexual‐assault laws).

5. The Baltic States & Eastern Fringe

  • Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (purple area): “On Sale”
    • Explanation: Suggests Trump imagines the Baltics could be “bought off” or easily swayed (or sold to Russia).
  • Belarus: “Already Russian”
    • Explanation: References Belarus’s close alignment with Moscow.
  • Ukraine: “Exchange for Kamchatka”
    • Explanation: A Risk‐board‐game joke (trading Ukraine for Russia’s Far Eastern territory) and a nod to Trump’s alleged willingness to let Russia expand into Ukraine.

6. Russia (big red area)

  • Label: “Chairman of the Electoral College”
  • Explanation: Satirizes allegations that Russia helped Trump in the 2016 US election, as though Putin “chaired” America’s Electoral College.

7. “Greedy Economic Foes!” (the large teal EU area)

Inside this big teal swath, Tsvetkov adds extra one‐liners for specific countries:

  • Germany: “Obama’s Girlfriend”
    • Joking that Trump saw Merkel (and by extension Germany) as too friendly with Obama.
  • France: Labeled here as “Coffee Boy” also his famous viral mis-tweet:  covfefe
  • Italy: “Look, a Boot!”
    • References Italy’s shape (the “boot”).
  • Austria: “True Germans”
    • A tongue‐in‐cheek dig at how Austrians speak German and Trump’s rumored fondness for certain Germanic stereotypes.
  • Poland: “Good NATO”
    • Trump frequently praised Poland’s defense spending/loyalty to NATO.
  • Hungary: “Micro Putin”
    • A nod to Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán’s reputation as a Putin‐style strongman.
  • Slovenia: “Melania’s Barn”
    • Melania Trump is originally Slovenian.
  • Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia, etc.): “Afghanistan”
    • Suggests Trump might see the ex‐Yugoslav region as just “some war‐torn place.”
  • Romania & Bulgaria and Greece: Labeled “Weak” and “Very Weak,” and “Weakest” respectively
    • Plays on Trump’s repeated accusations that various countries are “weak” allies and possibly weak economies.

8. Turkey (brown area)

  • Label: “Mini Putin”
  • Explanation: A satirical name for President Erdoğan, often compared to Putin for his strongman tactics.
