The map above shows a very suprising fact, only 3 countries in the world (besides the United States) have economies that are larger than California’s when measured in nominal (exchange rate) Us Dollars (USD).
Here is a full list:
Nominal GDP estimates for 2024 (with source):
- US: $29.2 Trillion (IMF)
- China: $18.3 Trillion (IMF)
- Germany: $4.7 Trillion (IMF)
- Japan: $4.1 Trillion (IMF)
- California: $4.1 Trillion (BEA)
- India: $3.9 Trillion (IMF)
- UK: $3.6 Trillion (IMF)
- France: $3.2 Trillion (IMF)
However, the results above only take into account the value of the economies at official exchange rates, when you factor in cost of living using Purchasing Power Parity a rather different ranking emerges:
- China: $37.1 Trillion
- US: $29.2 Trillion
- India: $16 Trillion
- Russia: $6.9 Trillion
- Japan: $6.6 Trillion
- Germany: $6.0 Trillion
- Brazil: $4.7 Trillion
- Indonesia: $4.7 Trillion
- France: $4.4 Trillion
- UK: $4.3 Trillion
- California: $4.1 Trillion
In this ranking 10 other countries (outside of the US) have economies larger than California’s.
However, at only 39 million people, California has 40% fewer people than the next smaller country on the list (France, 66 million).
