Share of White Europeans (Or Those With European Ancestry) By African Country In 1960 vs 2017

Map created by reddit user bezzleford
The map above shows the estimated white European population (including those of European descent) by African country in both 1960 and 2017. From the map author:

This map shows the % of countries in Africa that are either Europeans or self-identify as a white ethnic group of whole European decent. This map excludes people of only partial European decent (such as Coloureds).

A few sidenotes

  • I chose 1960 because it was a year a lot of nations in Africa become independent and I managed to find a fair amount of data for that year.
  • There were large European populations in Tunisia and Morocco but they mostly left shortly after independence in the late 50s and thus I have no data for them in 1960.
  • Eritrea had a large Italian population before the 50s. In 1939 the colony was around 10% Italian.
  • Italian North Africa (Libya) was around 12-13% Italian just before WW2.
  • Since 1960 only South Africa, Botswana and Namibia have seen an increase in their white populations. South Africa increased from 3.0 million to 4.6 million while white Namibians increased from 66,000 to approx. 75,000 today.
  • The settlement with the most white people is South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria. The city has around 400,000 white people living within or just outside. This is more than the rest of the non-South African white populations added together. Pretoria itself is 52% white.
  • The next 17 largest white city populations are all in South Africa, with Windhoek at 18th place.
  • There are around 55,000 white people living in Windhoek, making up around 17% of the population.

EDIT: I have excluded data from the Joshua Project, fake government websites and the CIA factbook because their data has shown to be incorrect and hence the source unreliable.

However, some users questioned the data including this very detailed comment from a now deleted account:

This data is wrong, the % of white people in Africa today is higher the % for South Africa is right, but here is a list of mistakes

  • 7% of Namibia is white, not 3%
  • 1.2% of Angola is white, not 0.46%
  • 3% of Botswana is white, not 1.3%
  • 0.57% of Madagascar is white
  • 1% of Tunisia is white
  • 0.3% of Morocco is white
  • 1% of Equatorial Guinea is white
  • 2% of Swaziland is white the other countries seem to be correct.

another thing to note that the % of Europeans in 1960 also appears to be wrong for north Africa, French Europeans made up 16% of Algeria as late as 1962, and prior to Independence in 1956 there were 250,000 Europeans in Tunisia in 1960 and 500,000 in Morocco another thing to note, in the 1940s and 50s whites also made up 15% of the population of Libya

The Cia are accurate sources, it is their job to gather information The Joshua Project are Christian missionaries who have people on the ground in Africa and are a good source There are also several sources from News Articles and two from Ranking websites and One from a Book.
