Which Country Is The Greatest Threat to World Peace?

Map created by Joe Hammer

The map shows the results of a 2013 (pre-Trump) WIN/Gallup International survey asking people which country they felt was the greatest threat to world peace.

According to the survey results:

The US was the overwhelming choice (24% of respondents) for the country that represents the greatest threat to peace in the world today. This was followed by Pakistan (8%), China (6%), North Korea, Israel and Iran (5%). Respondents in Russia (54%), China (49%) and Bosnia (49%) were the most fearful of the US as a threat.

Interestingly, Iran was seen as the biggest threat by Americans, Canadians and Brits, but Australians viewed the US as the biggest threat.

Regional rivalries were also common, for example South Koreans think of North Korea as the biggest threat to world peace, the Japanese, Vietnamese and Filipinos think of China as the biggest threat (although China views the US as the biggest threat to peace), Indians view Pakistan as the biggest threat (although Pakistan does not return the favour, instead focusing on the US as the biggest threat) and Poles view Russia as the biggest threat to peace.

However, other countries had some slightly less expected results for example: Bangladeshis think Israel is the biggest threat to world peace, Italians think Afghanistan is the biggest threat and Afghans think of Pakistan as the biggest threat to world peace.

The survey methodology:

In each country a national probability sample of around 1000 men and women was interviewed either face to face (34 countries), via telephone (11 countries) or online (20 countries). The field work was conducted during September 2013 – December 2013. In general the error margin for surveys of this kind is +3-5% at 95% confidence level. The global average has been computed according to the share of the covered adult population of the surveyed countries.

The map comes from the following video created by Joe Hammer:

Looking over the methodology data for this map, overall, they surveyed 66,806 people out of the 5,450,993,841 people in the age groups they were surveying (usually 18+, with 15+ in some countries). That’s a measly 0.00001225574 %, on average, with the highest percentage still not reaching over 1%. That’s a rounding error.

Trust that data if you want, but I’m gonna need more samples than that before I paint an entire country in the same colors.

Ah, you’re comparing the size of the sample to the size of the population (people in the world > 18yrs)? If I understand you, I should correct you. Actually, for the results to be trustworthy depends only on two things: random sampling and large sample size (assuming informed and honest researchers and honest participants). If you do the math, you’ll see that the size of the population sampled from doesn’t matter. Since the sample size was large, we’ve met one requirement and, we only need to ask, “was this a truly random sample?” It wasn’t truly random, because in some counties, people could only be interviewed if they had a phone or internet connection. That can bias some surveys at some times and places, as the 1936 Literary Digest Poll illustrates.

I took those numbers directly from the methodology report linked on the page:
        http://www.wingia.com/en/services/end_of_year_survey_2013/methodology/7/38/

The sample size in every country is less than 1% of the population it’s supposed to represent. If you went to a mathematical statistics conference of 1,000 people and got 10 of those people’s political opinions, then announced to the room that the opinion of the entire room matched those 10 people you would get laughed out of the room.

The only way you could accurately do a survey like this without polling millions of people would be to have the area you are trying to represent have less people, such as polling 50,000 people in a city of 500,000 people, then claiming “X city thinks such and such”.

In other words, this survey is biting off more than it can chew.

Melanie – Switzerland is in fact a beautiful place – especially from the perspective of the wealthy, white ruling class. Your country (assuming you’re Swiss) has managed to become one of the most prosperous nations through it’s political amorality and the exclusion of ‘undesirables’. Unfortunately the Swiss definition of undesirable doesn’t seem to apply to Nazis or money launderers. You’ve been perfectly willing to collude with some of the most evil people in history when it suits your purposes. A nation of rich cowards.

            (1) “You’re an idiot or just a troll”.
Does that “or” represent a disjunctive conjunction? Does it represent an inclusive “or” xor an exclusive “or”?

            (2) “You’re an idiot or just a troll”

          • Grouchy Bear says

            August 18, 2017 at 10:02 am

Yes! And Cambodia and add about 45 more countries to the list. I travel extensively! North Korea was just a two day stint and very controlled and during the last regime, but it was a nice visit! Of course I had diplomatic protection at the time. America is a prison unless you get out, but most stay happily in that prison. Unaware of the world around them. Yes Cuba was a wonderful place and the people are amazing. In spite of the American Gov. trying to stifle it to death… I felt bad for Laos we tore it into shreds and when it was shredded, we kept bombing it, every damn bomb left over from Nam runs was literally dropped on Laos. I know, I saw it first hand… Yes and Iran is another wonderful country, just like Syria, well as Syria was, until we destroyed it… I would like to visit NK for an extended period, but looks like that will not happen at my age now. I stay safe in Russia. But China is a place I will live for a few years before I die… Fantastic country… My suggestion is to travel to Vietnam, they are pretty expensive to stay there in hotels, but the beaches are to die for and the food is fantastic. Much more expensive in my opinion than Taiwan and Cambodia… Maybe 50$ a day to Nam it and 30 a day in most places. I can travel Russia for under 20 a day. Many people in Russia will let you stay a night for free. Just good conversation and bring a bottle of spirits… Chinese are much more suspicious of us Americans… 😉

You have a nice day, I am dreaming of spending time in Uruguay…

Get a passport and travel the world…

I have recognized that fact. We have improvements to make. We also have a large share of the world’s population as well. North Korea has much less and has more people in prison per capita, for crimes as low as simply disagreeing with the regime or the regime not finding one member of a family not loyal enough (and they lock whole families up for that). Why don’t you and Rosie O’Donnell move to North Korea if you think it is so much better.

“These people say they are correct.”
How do they know they are correct? “The statistics agree with them.”
            Very persuasive.

And that’s not even getting into the fact that “threat to world peace” is a SUBJECTIVE value, because it can not be measured scientifically.
Unless of course someone has built a “World Peace threat detector” that somehow detects the ambient ‘threat levels’ of a politically designated area of land (i.e. a country) based of the thought processes of the people therein and their ability to act on those thoughts.

But if you want to say someone has built a mind reading device that can scan all of the U.S. at once, maybe the Tinfoil Hat people weren’t wrong after all?

You’re clearly never been to a statistics conference. A sample size of 1% of a nation is massive. To determine if a sample group is representative of the larger whole, you either calculate a p value or a confidence interval. This study calculated a confidence interval of 95%, which is pretty damn good. Go back to school, study statistics up to the Master’s level and then come back and talk.

I didn’t find it necessary to mention at the time, but someone else suggested it. Even if the data was a perfect representation the population of an area as a whole, coloring the whole country to represent 49% or 54% is visually misleading on purpose, when the rest of the country could have been colored to represent the rest of the responses in the poll.

I think it is also quite cute that countries like Mexico and the majority of the other countries of central and South America find the US to be the greatest threat yet so many of them still come here…often by breaking the law. In fact, what these America-hating libtards you are fighting with fail to see is that the majority of the major developed countries of the world according to this poll don’t see the US as the greatest threat. Many of them actually see the same threats we do…the REAL threats.

Keep in mind also that some of them fall for the propaganda, and may have hopes if they don’t see the full story. You could just as well argue that if the U.S. wasn’t regarded as a threat, there would be even more immigration. This could be part of the reason that many Syrian refugees go to Europe rather than America. I’m a U.S. citizen and a student who just graduated from IT school, and I can tell you that the rents keep going up, even as crime continues to rise also, and you can’t find even a decent place to live, even with what I’m expected to make. I am searching for work abroad; I can tell you that as an American. I’m very disappointed in where my country is heading.

Furthermore, biased reporting of statistics regarding immigration/emigration can also be severely misleading. For instance, it’s often not included how many Mexicans in the U.S. have returned home to Mexico voluntarily.

You don’t know much statistics, I’d guess. Even when the population is infinite, one can make useful claims from a finite sample *if* it is really random. E.g. biologists have not studied even that fraction of the insects of the world, yet they make useful predictions everyday. Moderate size samples are dangerous only when they’re biased.

That data is spot-on.While you may be right, can you justify the occupation of nearly every country in the world by US army,to the total of nearly 800 military bases around the globe?Add to that the more than 250 mostly useless wars fought since establishment and counting,is such a proven threat not real to you.Granted, you may be one of the crusading us army, but Imagine for just a minute and put your own feet in the shoes of Libyans,Iraqis, Afghans, Yemenis, and now Syrians. Each time you hear the name America, would you not feel badly physically existentially threatened?

Clinton won the popular vote, even with Trump literally committing treason for more votes. I wonder if Trump would have won if we lived in a democracy that actually cared what most people voted for.

Even with the electoral college and the treason, Trump only won because he ran against a ridiculously incompetent crook that led an even more incompetent political party.

Maybe we can put both of them in prison cells right next to each other. Though listening to their bitching might be cruel and unusual punishment for the other prisoners.

Don’t worry though, you’re not like that. Easy-to-bait people like you that have nothing better to do than respond to every single person in a forum are incredibly amusing.

Actually the numbers are completely sufficient, as it is much more important for a survey to be meaningful (or “true”) that a representative sample of people in each country is choosen than a large number. You will find additional information on that process here: https://measuringu.com/survey-sample-size/ – in a far less hot debated context. And yes, the way the survey is conducted (face-toface, web, telephone, ..) might make a difference. But I guess a well established research firm like Gallup has that under control and knows about the background of their respondents. Difficult woul only be a completly random web-survey – as there the terminating factor might be the level of activism people with a certain opinion have.

Except these countries are pretty much justified in their fear – south america as a whole was completely screwed over by the US who invaded, meddled in, or deposed democratically elected presidents (!) and replaced them with dictators in quite a large part of them.

Also, the US literally STOLE half of its land from Mexico (stretching from California to Colorado afaik) which at the time was considered one of the worst offenses and least justified conflicts in its history by its own people (!), but today it of course seems normal since it already belongs to the US. I don´t belive in trans-generational or even collective guilt so I don´t wanna say that the US outright owes them something, but it´s definitely justified to be afriad.

Cubans in the u.s. were supporters of the old corrupt government, landowners and the business elite who exploited working Cubans for great personal gains. They would, like republicans, deny workers healthcare, decent wages and benefits in the name of ‘free market’ and ‘freedom’. Many, like you, are fooled! Just as ‘freedom to own guns’ is allowed to slaughter Americans.

One example, America invaded Panama to build the Panama Canal when the local government would not agree to it! Of course, you would not know any of this. Clearly, the U.S. is the greatest threat to world peace. Somehow, it seems to have bestowed upon itself the right to be the world’s policeman, lawmaker and judiciary. Facts don’t lie, the U.S. has invaded, and bombed many countries around the world causing the death of millions of civilians and turning millions more into refugees. If justice prevails, many U.S. politicians and military leaders would be charged as war criminals. The U.S. defends its actions as protecting democracy and human rights. Really? Ask the people of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Brunei, Egypt, Turkey, the U.A.E. and many other dictatorial and human rights violating nations that are U.S. allies and spared U.S. criticism and military intervention. The U.S. is all about maintaining world domination and nothing else matters!

This doesn’t mention how the questions were asked, ie- given a list of countries vs open question, how it was worded, etc. It also doesn’t factor in that US is one of the most known countries, largely by entertainment, and therefore likely to be thought of under any international question. Finally, the polling questions differ from country to country and are unreliable for random sample- phone vs f2f vs online= different groups of people in each country. Would need multiple polling options in each country to approach random sample. Finally, this data is worthless without Trump factor, which greatly increases chance of threat to peace. 😇

Then again, as an American, maybe I’m biased. I do hope that eventually we stop policing the world and fighting every damn war. I think America should take care of America first, and everyone else can fight their own battles.

You can bet your ass finland and sweden view russia as biggest threat to world peace, while us is important friend. Lol are you dumb? I’m German, Germany is a US alley and guess what? We despise you (-r government) and your constant war mongering. USA was voted “Terrorist Nation no.1” not so long ago here, followed by Israel. Russia and China didn’t even make it to the list. I don’t know about Finnland, but Sweden doesn’t like you much either from what I get since living here and they don’t consider Russia a threat. Actually they consider the US a far bigger threat who tries to cut Europe off from profitable trade with Russia, because they want a) to force their far more expensive frecking s*** onto us and b) us not to become too independant from US recources. So yeah … We might be allies because right now the US can still force us into submission, but let’s see how much longer that will go on and then watch how fast your allies will turn their back on you. We do NOT like you. Period.

Ike had it right when he warned U.S. citizens to “beware the military-industrial complex.” Unfortunately, we did not heed his good advice.
Wall St. is part of that big complex, as are representatives & senators in every state of the union where some local industry is making $ from parts for the military or for companies which supply it.
It’s a paradox that the WW2 transformation which allowed the USA to do good by defeating Hitler, now unbalances our own economy, usurping $ which would do much more good in healthcare, education or infrastructure improvements. As an American senior citizen (who has traveled extensively) that saddens me deeply.

The American attitude makes it almost impossible for them to realise the distain in which they are held. The ‘land of the free’ indoctrination starts young. In truth its an essential mechanism to maintain order. If you believe that everywhere else in the world is a worse place to be, then you accept crushing inequality and terrible quality of life.
When presented with evidence (albeit the survey above is just a bit of fun), it is so contrary to the American ‘we’re number one’ belief system that they simply deny that it can be valid. They shout ‘Fake News’ or something similar.
Unfortunately this only further reinforces the international consensus that this is a nation of fat, ignorant, bigoted, aggressive halfwits.
‘Why do they come here then?’, is the retort. If my family is starving and my neighbour rich but abhorrent, I’ll be nice to his face. I might even mow his lawn for cash.
But when I’m asked if I like the guy… I might be honest.
    Hence this survey result.

    Sorry Americans…nobody likes you.

What an excellent comment! Just realize that not all of the US citizens completely fall for that “we’re the best in the world” nonsense. Some of us come to realize the Monroe Doctrine and the incessant warlike nature of our nation are negatives, not positives. I started many a debate in civics class about this very thing. Of course, that was back when schools HAD civics classes. They were phased out. Because obviously, we don’t want critically thinking adults, do we?

define America, Let’s see, there is America Inc, the government that decides to invade other countries, overthrows democratically elected governments, allows the global financial crisis to develop, supplies arms indiscriminately to all and sundries just for short term corporate profit.
Or the American people, while electing that government in the false hope that it will care for them and improve their lives and livelihood, care for the sick and needy, give them a quality of life.
America Inc which has been at war 222 out of 239 yrs since 1776 is definitely NOT innocent, let that sink in for a moment.

How much we love our Family, friends, and care for our people. Then for some reason when it comes to commenting to strangers on line. people just let such horrible things out and say things to others that are just purely out of self hate or anger?? I’m willing to bet if anyone of you who are saying mean things to each other were actually in the same house introduced by a mutual friends You would be not only civil but prob have a great time getting to know each other and learn from each other and intrigued on our life styles. I’m an American citizen and I love LOVE LOVE America !! Though hell yes there are a shit load of political bs scams within our Government. Some of the things our politicians due to get where they are are just sick. Though that goes the same in EVERY successful country! Bad and hard choices need to be made in order to get the things done that need to be done to save and help the larger Percentage. Yes there are still bad -very bad apples in EVERY tree! Whether it’s cops, politicians , teachers , or freaking preachers ! Bad people exist! EVERYWHERE AND EVERY COUNTRY. So we can all sit here and be mean to someone in another country just to be mean but if you care about peace than don’t be apart of the pessimistic behavior. Please. It really is that simple. It spreads like fire .

Which country is most likely to introduce another war because it suits Trumps personal agenda? Which country screwed its own citizens during the GFC and let the perpetrators get away with it? Which country has has the most people in prison? Which country feels it needs to manage every conflict in the world? Which country has treated the continuation of the WHO, NATO, UN and made pacts with its long standing allies?

I am from the USA and I would pick the USA not because I think the USA is a particularly immoral country, but because it is simply the only relevant country on earth concerning global military affairs. No other country has the global military reach or ability to act as the USA, and thus can’t be as great a potential threat to global peace as the USA. The USA could fucking end most countries on this planet and there is little they could do about it if it chose to.

I do believe that if the USA completely left the old world and ceased to be a factor in the military affairs there, great power competition similar to the pre-WW2 days would return to that region and it could end very poorly.

These countries would no longer be concerned about some far off power, but their neighbors where annexations and long term problems are possible. The USA will never annex or occupy for very long any part of the old world, though it could well invade parts of it for times if it believes it has reason to in the moment.
