None of The Countries That Bordered Romania Before World War 2, Border It Today

The map above shows a slightly odd fact that needs some explanation.

In 1938, Just before World War 2, Romania was bordered by the following countries:

  • The USSR
  • Poland
  • The Czechoslovak Republic
  • The Kingdom of Hungary
  • The Kingdom of Yugoslavia
  • The Kingdom of Bulgaria

Today it is bordered by:

  1. Bulgaria: 608 km (378 mi)
  2. Ukraine (2): 531 km (330 mi)
  3. Serbia: 476 km (296 mi)
  4. Moldova: 450 km (280 mi)
  5. Hungary: 443 km (275 mi)

So some of these are rather obvious, the USSR, Czechoslovak Republic and the the Kingdom of Yugoslavia no longer exist in any form.

The Kingdom of Hungary and the Kingdom of Bulgaria ceased to exist as Kingdoms after the war.

The Kingdom of Hungary became:

  • Hungarian Republic (1946-49)
  • Hungarian People’s Republic (1949–1989)
  • Hungary (technically the 3rd Republic) (1989 – today)

The Kingdom of Bulgaria became:

  • People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946-1990)
  • Republic of Bulgaria (1990 – Today)

In 1938, Poland was known as the Republic of Poland (aka the Second Polish Republic) the same name it is known as today (although it is now the Third Polish Republic), because between 1952 and 1989 it was known as the Polish People’s Republic.

However, Poland doesn’t border Romania today!

And finally, Romania itself doesn’t exist in the form it was in 1938.

At the time it was the Kingdom of Romania until 1947, when it became the Romanian People’s Republic (1947–1965) then Socialist Republic of Romania (1965-1989) and then became a Republic in 1989 which remains to this day.

None of the countries that bordered Poland in 1988 exist, this time for real.
