The map above shows which countries are richer or poorer than the US based on GDP per capita in PPP $ dollars.
PPP $ account for the local cost of goods and services in a country rather than official exchange rates. The data comes from the IMF and is for 2025.
Below is a list both using $PPP and official exchange rates.
PPP
- Singapore – $156,755
- Luxembourg – $152,915
- Macau – $134,042
- Ireland – $134,000
- Qatar – $121,605
- Norway – $107,892
- Switzerland – $97,581
- Brunei – $95,758
- Guyana – $94,258
- United States – $89,105
To this list I’ve also added: Monaco, Liechtenstein as they have previously has higher numbers than the US in the past and continue to have higher nominal GDP numbers today.
Bermuda also likely makes this list but isn’t included in the map above.
And if you’re curious here are the numbers at the official exchange rates:
- Luxembourg: $140,941
- Ireland: $108,919
- Switzerland: $104,896
- Singapore: $92,932
- Iceland: $90,284
- Norway: $89,694
- United States: $89,105
Interestingly, Iceland is the only country richer in exchange rate terms but poorer in PPP, due to its very high cost of living.
