Human Settlements That Have No Settlement Further North With A Greater Population

Map created by reddit user beingthehunt
This map shows human settlements that are unique for being the northernmost locations with a specific population size, where there is no more populous settlement further north.

Here is a summary of the cities and settlements listed on the map, with their populations:

  1. Tokyo (37.7 million) The largest city in the world, Tokyo is shown as the most southern settlement on the map.
  2. Seoul (23 million)
  3. New York (21.5 million)
  4. Moscow (17.3 million)
  5. Saint Petersburg (5.38 million)
  6. Arkhangelsk (350,000)
  7. Murmansk (307,000): Murmansk is known as one of the largest cities within the Arctic Circle, with no larger settlement north of it.
  8. Norilsk (180,000)
  9. Tromsø (78,000) Tromsø is the largest city in northern Norway.
  10. Alta (15,100)
  11. Hammerfest (11,400)
  12. Tiksi (5,060)
  13. Khatanga (3,450)
  14. Longyearbyen (1,750) Located in the Svalbard archipelago, Longyearbyen is known as one of the most northern inhabited settlements with over 1,000 people.
  15. Alert (65)
Alert, located in Canada’s Nunavut territory, is a research station and one of the northernmost permanently inhabited places on Earth.

One notable city missing from the map is Helsinki, Finland which has an urban population of 1.3 million and is further North than St. Petersburg. This would also make it the most northern city of over 1 million people.

The Western hemisphere seems underrepresented in the map. Weirdly enough, I think Mexico City and Los Angeles should be on this map, even though neither is exactly in the north.

It looks to me as if both those cities are south of Tokyo, so do not qualify.
