The map above looks at US median home prices in each US county.
The data is from Q1 2024 and comes from the National Association of Realtors.
As a resident of London, one of the world’s most expensive cities, I find it fascinating.
- 26.5% of counties have an average home price of less than $150,000
- 56.8% have an average home price between $150,000 and $350,000
- 12.1% between $350,000 and $550,000
- 2.8% between $550,000 and $750,000
- 1.2% between $750,000 and $1 million
- 0.6% over $1 million
The 5 counties with the highest average home prices in 2024 are:
- Nantucket County, MA: $1,705,210
- San Mateo County, CA: $1,701,860
- Santa Clara County, CA: $1,664,410
- Marin County, CA: $1,584,980
- San Francisco County, CA: $1,575,700
- Teton County, Wyoming: $1,311,740
One thing that really surprised me was that New York county (aka Manhattan) was not in the top 5 (although is still over a million at $1,193,370).
In the UK, Kensington and Chelsea (one of London’ 33 boroughs) has the highest average house price at £1,345,057
($1,767,672), which would be enough to be in the top spot.
And the 5 counties with the lowest average home price in 2024 are:
- King County, Texas: $31,700
- Todd County, South Dakota: $41,800
- McDowell County, West Virginia: $58,640
- Cochran County, Texas: $62,560
- Knox County, Texas: $65,920
Conversely, the cheapest local authority in the UK was Burnley at £116,526 ($153,132), which wouldn’t even be in the bottom quarter of US house prices.
