Why Is This French Nuclear Power Plant So Close To Belgium?

It’s location so close to Belgium has brought a certain amount of ridicule on the internet.

But why did France build it?

France built the Chooz Nuclear Power Plant close to the Belgian border primarily due to the site’s geographical and logistical advantages, as well as considerations related to France and Belgium’s energy strategies.

The main reason was that the original Chooz A reactor (shut down in 1991) was a joint venture between French (EDF) and Belgian (SENA) grid operators.

Chooz B1 and B2 are now run solely by EDF.

Being close to high-demand regions helps reduce transmission losses and optimizes grid integration.
