Bitcoin heat map showing the location of businesses where they can be used as payment. Map by coinmap.org

The Bitcoin heat map above shows the locations of 6,683 business where you can use bitcoins to pay. As you can clearly see, businesses are almost exclusively located in Western Europe and the Eastern United States.

This would seem to suggest that the cryptocurrency’s goal of being a truly global, peer-to-peer alternative to fiat money may still be a few years off.

Nevertheless, while the location of businesses is not that widespread as supporters would like, the types of businesses include everything from grocery stores and cafes to hotels and nightclubs.
