Alaska-USA

Map created by Williwaw Publishing found via reddit user jscaktdgn9.

Most maps of the United States focus on the lower 48 at the diminishment or exclusion of Alaska and Hawaii. The map above reverses this trend and puts Alaska front and centre.

Instead of Alaska being relegated to the side or bottom of the map, only shown in a vague outline, you get a very clear view of Alaska and only a vague idea of the shape of the rest of the United States. Also, amusing to note is the fact that Hawaii is shown to be almost the same size as the Lower 48.

And in case you’re wondering how big each of these 3 areas are:

  • Contiguous United States (Lower 48): 3,119,884.69 square miles (8,080,464.3 km2)
  • Alaska: 663,268 sq mi (1,717,856 km2)
  • Hawaii: 10,931 sq mi (28,311 km2)

So, while Alaska is big (it’s the biggest state; more than twice the size of Texas) it’s still a fair bit smaller than the Contiguous States combined. The following map can help you get a better idea on size:

Very enlightening – West to East about from Ukiah/Clear Lake, CA to Gainesville, FL. Wow.

13 years in Alaska. I miss it daily. Still consider myself Alaskan and look at the rest of the lower 48 this way. When 9/11 hit it was like it was happening in a different country.

I am trying to buy a copy of the US map from Alaska’s point of view. I am not having any luck. Is there a different web address I could try or a phone number?

        Please let me know.

        Thank you.

Alaska is so far away from the eastern United States (and eastern Canada) that a. Anchorage is roughly midway between New York or Washington and Japan (and hence why Anchorage is such a strategic location that it has among the biggest cargo airports around) and b. Montreal or New York is only slightly less far from Anchorage than from London or Paris. Heck, it’s substantially further west than even the western part of the Lower 48 (e.g. California/Oregon/Washington).

Into The Wild is not a book that most Alaskan’s would recommend as reading material to learn about the region.
