I’d be interested to see the same graphic map showing all the times a firearm was used to stop a crime.
similarly one showing the deaths per weapon, ie Knife, stranglation, bottle top, handgun, assault rifle, etc.

I’d also like to see the numerous times a weapon was used to stop or prevent a crime and how many lives were saved by doing so.

Hoe many lives were saved is a very hard one. The number of victims is never predictable.

Do you mean a weapon used by a civilian or including police officers?
And do you mean firearm or do you mean all types of weapons?

“Defensive Gun Use” is almost non-existent – the great majority of cases where guns are drawn on people are illegal aggression.
The Gun Lobby hates any research on the problem and banned any funding of it by the USG in 1995 – 20 years later the “National Crime Victimization Survey” is plugging some of the holes. Some 90,000 households, comprising about 160,000 individuals, are surveyed twice a year.
“… data for the five-year period from 2007 to 2011, looking at more than 14,000 crimes in which there was some degree of personal contact between the victim and perpetrator
“… More than 42% of the time, the victim took some action – maced the offender, yelled at the offender, struggled, ran away, or called the police. Victims used a gun in less than 1% of the incidents (127/14,145).
“… of the more than 300 sexual assaults reported in the surveys, the number of times women were able to use a gun to protect themselves was zero.
“Indeed, a study of 10 previous years of crime survey data found that of more than 1,100 sexual assaults, in only one did the victim use a gun in self-defense. http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0804-hemenway-defensive-gun-home-20150730-story.html

Often the weapon used to stop the crime is a self inflicted wound at the end. The shooter commits suicide.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 195 mass shootings in the United States so far in 2023. Of those, 98 shooters committed suicide, while 97 were killed by law enforcement. In 2022, there were 610 mass shootings, and 357 shooters committed suicide, while 253 were killed by law enforcement.

Until there is a standardised definition, the terminology will be arbitrary. Here the defintion is ‘four or more people shot and killed’. The most frequently used definition in the news (usually credited to the Gun Victims Alliance GVA) is ‘four or more victims shot’ — i.e., (a) not including the perpetrator(s) and (b) counting both killed and wounded.

This map is inaccurate. The dot in East Idaho represents a shooting in Rigby, ID. May 6, 2021. 3 people were injured, no deaths. I live close and had children in other schools at the time. According to the definition in the article, it doesn’t ‘count’ as a mass shooting. How many other dots are inaccurate? Disappointed that such information is just thrown out there and taken as absolute truth.
