Do European Houses Look Better On The Inside or Outside?

Map created by amazing__maps
The map above is based on a survey from Instagram Map account amazing__maps which did a survey asking their users if they though houses looked better on the inside, outside or were about equal.

The color coding represents these perceptions:

  • Blue: Houses are perceived to look better on the outside.
  • Yellow: Houses are perceived to look equally appealing on the outside and inside.
  • Red: Houses are perceived to look better on the inside.
  • Striped areas: Mixed or divided perceptions within those regions.

An example provided in the inset shows a house in the Balkans, with a plain or unfinished exterior (outside) contrasting sharply with a modern, well-furnished interior (inside).

This supports the red designation for most Balkan countries, reflecting the idea that interior design often takes priority over exterior appearances in this region.

Overall, in all of Eastern Europe houses are perceived to look better on the inside than the outside.

In Scandinavia, Central Europe, England, Ireland and Iceland houses are thought to look as good outside as they do inside (although south-east England, East Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, some of southern Belgium and Italy are mixed).

Finally, Portugal, Spain, Scotland and most of France and Italy all have houses that are thought to look better on the outside than the inside.

What do you think? Do you agree?
