Population of London Compared To US Cities

Map created by Mildly-Displeased

The map above shows just how big London’s population is compared to several large US cities. But it should be noted that the numbers for all cities (including London) are for the city proper, rather than the larger urban or metropolitan area.

Here are the cities by the numbers:

Greater London (2022): 8,866,180

US Cities Based On 2020 Census:

  • Chicago: 2,746,388
  • Philadelphia: 1,603,797
  • Dallas: 1,304,379
  • San Francisco: 873,965
  • Seattle: 737,015
  • Washington DC: 689,545
  • Detroit: 639,111

Total US population: 8,594,200

271,980 less than London, or a Toledo, OH worth.

    Interesting!

I believe, however, there is a typo. I’m assuming “Total US population: 8,594,200” is supposed to be “Total NYC population: 8,594,200”.

I think it means the population of those cities, ie London city proper, is slightly more than that of those cities proper. We can argue about metro areas, but there is no UK equivalent to a US MSA or CSA….if you go on the region around NYC and London, you have 22.2 million within 100km of NYC and 22.6 million within 100km of London..Chicago has about 10.5 million

It says that these numbers are just for the cities not their greater metropolitan areas. The population of the City of London is less than 10,000. It’s only by adding the population of the metropolitan area (Greater London) that it swells to over 8 million.

Greater London is not the metro area…London’s Metro is much bigger than Greater Lomdon and if you use the american MSA or CSA logic it’s about 24 million, bigger than any American city

What exactly is the point of this comparison? It leaves out the 1st, 2nd and 4th largest US cities and includes 3 that aren’t even in the top 10 by population. So what’s being compared?
