The map above shows one of my favourite random facts, apparently Wyoming has only 2 sets of escalators in the entire state.
As a London resident this is just wild to me, I rode at least 4 escalators just to get to work this morning via train and tube.
So the thought of there being only 2 in the entire state sort of blow my mind.
Here’s a summary why:
Both of the state’s escalators are located in Casper (po: 59,000), at Hilltop National Bank and First Interstate Bank.
This scarcity stems from Wyoming’s low population density (5.85 people per square mile) and lack of high-occupancy or multi-story buildings, making escalators unnecessary in most cases.
The two existing escalators were installed in the 1950s and 1970s, and no new ones have been built in over 40 years.
The high cost of installation and maintenance, coupled with limited need, discourages architects and clients from adding escalators to new construction.
Wyoming’s three shopping malls do not contain any escalators, and the state’s population and architectural trends suggest that more escalators are unlikely to appear soon.
