In both Greece and Cyprus, something as simple as sipping coffee while driving can land you in trouble with the law.
While many drivers across Europe casually enjoy their morning brew on the go, these two Mediterranean countries take a stricter approach.
Under their traffic regulations, drinking coffee—or any beverage—while behind the wheel is considered a distraction and is punishable with fines.
This rule reflects a broader focus on road safety in both countries, where authorities are cracking down on anything that reduces a driver’s full control of the vehicle.
It might seem surprising, especially in coffee-loving cultures like Greece and Cyprus, but the aim is clear: fewer distractions, safer roads. So if you’re driving there, keep your hands on the wheel—your coffee break will have to wait.
And according to Keep Talking Greece, “A fine of 100 euros and removal of driving license of 30 days threaten those who police catches with on hand on the wheel and one hand holding a cup of Greeks’ favorite drink.”
