Map Of Countries That Lost Soldiers Helping US Forces In Iraq Between 2003 & 2011

The map above shows which countries lost soldiers helping US forces during the Iraq War between 2003 and 2011.

It follows on from my previous map: Map Of Coalition Countries That Lost At Least 1 Solider Helping US Forces In Afghanistan Between 2001 & 2021.

Here are the totals for collation countries, followed by the much, much larger estimates for Iraqi deaths:

Hungary110,014,3240.10
Czech Republic110,506,8130.10
Azerbaijan18,997,5860.11

These totals comes from the now defunct iCasualties website as accessed via Wikipedia (deaths per million is my calculation).

As for Iraqi deaths the numbers vary wildly depending on sources.

Wikipedia has a good summary here, but the total ranges from a low of 109,032 violent deaths including 66,081 civilian deaths from the Iraq War Logs (only for 2004 to 2009) up to ORB survey of Iraq War casualties at 1,220,580 in 2007.

The very sad truth is we’ll likely never know the true number, but it is orders of magnitude higher than Coalition Deaths and like Afghanistan one wonders what it was all for.

As the Cost of War Project puts it:

In their most recent calculations, the Costs of War Project estimates that post-9/11 wars participated in by the US have directly killed 905,000 to 940,000, and indirectly 3,6000,000-3,800,000 people though the precise figure remains unknown.

This brings the estimated total of direct and indirect deaths to 4,500,000-4,700,000 people in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Yemen.

In addition to 38,000,000 displaced peoples and [total costs] exceeded $8 trillion, including $2.2 trillion reserved for veterans’ care through 2050.

A 2021 report from the project concluded that since September 11, 2001, four times more U.S. veterans and service members had died by suicide than had been killed in combat.
