Map created by generic_maps
The map above shows the 6 families that control the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 7 constituent Emirates. Here’s a bit more about each family and Emirate:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was officially formed on December 2, 1971, when six emirates—Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, and Fujairah—united into a federation.

Ras Al Khaimah joined in early 1972, completing the current seven-emirate structure.

The UAE was formed following the withdrawal of the British from their treaty obligations in the Gulf, as the Trucial States.

The federation was spearheaded by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum of Dubai, who became pivotal figures in its creation.

Below is a summary of the seven emirates and the ruling families:

1. Abu Dhabi

  • Ruling Family: Al Nahyan Dynasty
  • Current Leader: Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan
  • Details: Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate and holds most of the UAE’s oil reserves, making it a significant player in the federation. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, was the first president of the federation. Abu Dhabi also serves as the capital of the UAE.

2. Dubai

  • Ruling Family: Al Maktoum Dynasty
  • Current Leader: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
  • Details: Dubai is the most populous emirate and is globally known for its modern infrastructure, economic innovation, and luxury lifestyle. It plays a crucial role in trade, finance, and tourism. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid is also the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.

3. Sharjah

  • Ruling Family: Al Qasimi Dynasty
  • Current Leader: Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi
  • Details: Known as the cultural capital of the UAE, Sharjah is renowned for its focus on education, arts, and preserving Emirati heritage. It is also the third-largest emirate in terms of area.

4. Ajman

  • Ruling Family: Al Nuaimi Dynasty
  • Current Leader: Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi III
  • Details: Ajman is the smallest emirate geographically but has seen significant development in recent decades. Its economy is primarily driven by manufacturing and trade.

5. Umm Al Quwain

  • Ruling Family: Al Mualla Dynasty
  • Current Leader: Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla
  • Details: Umm Al Quwain is the least populated emirate, with an economy focused on fishing, agriculture, and tourism. It is known for its serene environment and traditional lifestyle.

6. Ras Al Khaimah

  • Ruling Family: Al Qasimi Dynasty
  • Current Leader: Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi
  • Details: Ras Al Khaimah, rich in history, is known for its mountains and archaeological sites. It has a diversified economy, including manufacturing, real estate, and tourism.

7. Fujairah

  • Ruling Family: Al Sharqi Dynasty
  • Current Leader: Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi
  • Details: The only emirate on the UAE’s eastern coast, Fujairah is vital for shipping and trade due to its strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz. It is also known for its natural landscapes and beaches.

Each emirate retains a significant degree of autonomy under the federal system, with the ruling families wielding substantial influence over their territories.

However, they work cohesively under the UAE’s federal framework, which allows for coordinated policies in areas like defense, foreign affairs, and national development.
