How Russia Has Competed At The Olympics Since 1896

The map above shows the 7 ways Russia and Russians have competed at the Olympic Games Since 1896.

Here is a comparison of the various versions their Olympic participation over the past 120 years.

1. Russian Empire (1900–1912)

First appearance: 1900 Paris Olympics.

  • Athletes competed under the Russian Empire, then still ruled by the Tsars.
  • Participation was relatively small compared to Western European nations.
  • Russia attended:
    • 1900 Paris
    • 1908 London
    • 1912 Stockholm
  • Won modest numbers of medals; early success included wrestling, skating, and figure skating (which was once part of Summer Olympics).

End of participation:

  • The Russian Revolution (1917) and subsequent political upheaval meant Russia did not compete again until after the Soviet Union formed.

2. Soviet Union (USSR) (1952-1988)

First appearance: 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

  • The USSR entered the Games as a global superpower.
  • Built a highly organized state sports system focused on Olympic success.
  • Quickly became one of the dominant Olympic nations alongside the USA.

Key characteristics:

  • Consistently top of medal tables.
  • Strength in gymnastics, weightlifting, athletics, wrestling, ice hockey, and figure skating.
  • Hosted the 1980 Moscow Olympics (boycotted by several Western nations).

  • The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.

3. Unified Team (1992)

  • After the USSR collapse, former Soviet republics competed together as the Unified Team.
  • Used Olympic flag and anthem instead of national symbols.
  • Participated in:
    • 1992 Winter Olympics (Albertville)
    • 1992 Summer Olympics (Barcelona)

Notes:

  • Official IOC code: EUN.
  • Included Russia and most former Soviet republics (except 3 Baltic states, which competed independently).

4. Independent Russian Federation (1994–2016)

First independent appearance: 1994 Winter Olympics (Lillehammer).

  • Russia competed as its own nation under the Russian flag.
  • Remained one of the strongest Olympic teams.
  • Hosted the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

However:

  • Allegations and investigations into widespread state-supported doping later affected participation status.

5. Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) 2018

Following findings by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA):

  • Russia’s Olympic Committee was suspended due to systemic doping violations.
  • At the 2018 Winter Olympics (PyeongChang):
    • Approved athletes competed as Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR).
    • Neutral uniforms and Olympic flag used.
    • Olympic anthem played for medals.

6. Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) 2020-2022

Due to ongoing sanctions from doping rulings:

  • Russia could not officially compete under its name or flag.
  • Athletes competed under Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) designation.

Used at:

  • Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (held 2021).
  • Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Characteristics:

  • Neutral flag derived from ROC emblem.
  • Russian anthem replaced by music approved by IOC.

7. Individual Neutral Athletes (2024 onward)

Key features:

  • No national symbols, flag, or anthem.
