In 2024, this tiny island welcomed 7.2 million tourists — more than all of Brazil’s 6.6 million.
And yet… Brazil is 4,200 times bigger. If Brazil matched Tenerife in tourist density, it would have hosted 29 billion visitors — nearly 4 times the world’s population.
I’m not 100% sure where the numbers come from, but they do seem to be relatively accurate. Wikipedia cites 7,384,707 tourists in 2024 for Tenerife, while Brazil received 6.65 million according to Embratur.
Here’s a side by side comparison of the two locations:
| Tenerife | Brazil | |
|---|---|---|
| Population | 965,575 | 212,583,750 |
| Area | 2,034.38 km2 (785.48 sq mi) | 8,515,767 km2 (3,287,956 sq mi) |
| Annual Tourists | 7.38 million | 6.65 million |
| Tourists per person | 7.6 | 0.03 |
| Tourists per square KM | 3,627 | 0.79 |

Hardly surprise, Brazil is a third world sh*thole with delusions of grandeur.
