How this tool works
The map draws every county boundary in the United States from Census data (with Alaska and Hawaii as insets), and overlays the 300 largest US cities as dots sized by population. Hover any county for its name and state, and hover a dot for the city name. The county layer loads once (about 750 KB) and everything after that is instant.
What you can do with it
- See exactly which county each major city sits in
- Understand how county sizes vary, from tiny eastern counties to giant western ones

- Find neighboring counties around any city
Why use it
County maps and city maps usually come separately, which makes it surprisingly hard to answer which county is Phoenix in. Putting both layers on one interactive map answers it at a glance.
