An interactive map of every US county with population, area, and density.
How this tool works
Every one of the 3,144 counties is drawn from Census boundaries and joined to the latest Census population estimates (vintage 2024) and gazetteer land areas. Click any county for its population, land area, and density, or switch on shading to see population or density patterns in six grayscale bands across the whole country.
What you can do with it
- Look up the current population and size of any county instantly
- Shade by density to see the true urban-rural structure of the country
- Shade by population to spot the giant counties that dominate their states
- Compare neighboring counties without leaving the map
Why use it
County data lives in tables that make spatial patterns invisible. One map with click-for-details and shading modes turns three Census datasets into something you can actually explore.
