How this tool works
The tool tests your point against US state boundary polygons from the Census Bureau, then against the county boundaries of the matching state to find the county as well. Everything runs in your browser; the county boundary file loads only when first needed. As with any simplified boundary data, points within a couple of kilometers of a state or county line may resolve to the neighbor.

Why use it
County lookups usually mean a geocoding service with an API key. For the common case of just needing state and county, boundary polygons in the browser do the job with no account and no rate limit.
