How this tool works
The gray marker is the sublunar point, the spot on Earth where the moon is directly overhead this minute, computed from standard lunar position formulas. The shaded region is where the moon is currently below the horizon. The panel shows the current phase, illumination, and the live Earth to moon distance, which varies between about 356,000 and 407,000 km through the month. Click anywhere for moonrise and moonset times at that point.

Why use it
Moonrise tables exist, but a map that shows where the moon actually is right now makes the moon's motion far easier to grasp, and answers the practical question of whether it is worth stepping outside to look.
