The map above shows the results of the 1964 UK General Election. The number of seats won out of 630 by the major parties (and % vote share) were as follows:
Labour: 317. Leader and Prime Minister: Harold Wilson
Conservatives: 304. Leader: Sir Alec Douglas-Home
Liberal: 9. Leader: Jo Grimond
Notable things about the 1964 election include:
- Harold Wilson, at 48, became the youngest Prime Minister for 150 years.
- The election is thought by some to have tipped to a narrow Labour majority because of the Profumo affair, arguably the first modern political sex-scandal.
- Every single seat was won by Labour, the Tories or the Liberals. Every single one. Even in Northern Ireland.
- Smethwick in the West Midlands was the source of an ultra-grim controversy as the Tories took the seat from Labour – against the national trend – allegedly by using the slogan “If you want a [n-bomb] for a neighbour, vote Labour”.
