1923 UK Election Map

The map above shows the results of the 1923 UK General Election. The number of seats won out of 615 by the major parties (and % vote share) were as follows:

Labour: 191. Leader and Prime Minister: Ramsay MacDonald
Liberal: 158. Leader: HH Asquith.
Conservatives: 258. Leader: Stanley Baldwin.

Notable things about the 1922 election include:

  • The Conservatives won the most seats, but Labour was able to enter Downing Street with the tacit support of the Liberals.
  • Amusingly, the reason the Liberals went with it is because they expected Labour to perform disastrously once in government.
  • In any case, the government didn’t last – and there was to be another election in 1924, the third in three years.
  • In a foreshadow of 2017, the election was sparked when the new Conservative Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, felt the need to go to the country to receive his own mandate after taking over from Bonar-Law. But, as we can see above, the election produced a hung Parliament.
